Modern Mediterranean in Wicker Park

SCOPE: completely renovate a condo after fire damage

A 1,400 square foot condo in an 8 unit loft building was under forced interior reconstruction due to smoke damage. As newlyweds, the home owners welcomed the opportunity to renovate in their own style, while creating a comfortable and functional space for their lifestyle. Instead of following trends, they opted for an eclectic Modern Mediterranean style all their own. They preferred a seamless look utilizing natural materials. Better lighting was needed and storage was lacking, especially in the kitchen.

Wide plank, wood flooring throughout is level with the bathroom tile. A concrete vanity was custom made for the main bathroom, while concrete tile grounds the hall bathroom. Recessed ceiling lights were added throughout and storage space was increased with a large kitchen pantry. The kitchen countertop features an integrated sink and a solid walnut overhang for dining.

Incorporating their “Modern Mediterranean” taste, shades of white, cream and sand are offset by gold tones in the plumbing fixtures, door hardware, pendant lights, switch plates and outlets. Among the mostly new furnishings, vintage finds are interspersed. A focal point of the open living area is a tall reclaimed door outfitted with custom stained glass. Now this spacious home fits the couple’s needs and style perfectly.
