Graceland West Vintage Home

Renovate the kitchen while staying true to the architecture of the house

A rowhouse in the historical neighborhood of Graceland West caught the eye of a couple looking to buy their first home. With 11’ ceilings, a bay window and exposed brick details they couldn’t resist taking on the challenge of transforming it. The new homeowners knew that the kitchen renovation would be one of the first big projects to tackle. They chose a clean transitional style with slate gray shaker cabinets and wood shelves. The original brick remains behind the vent hood and creates an interesting focal point. White subway tile to the ceiling mimics the brick while brightening up the room. The look was completed with a concrete-like quartz countertop and stainless steel appliances.

The kitchen was awkwardly shaped and felt divided into 2 areas—the small working side and the larger dining area. Moving the refrigerator to the dining side freed up space for lots of cabinetry and a more open and functional layout. Display shelves were incorporated into a column that couldn’t be moved, creating a subtle separation between the 2 areas. Built in banquette seating creates a cozy dining area for the family to gather for meals, games or projects. The renovated kitchen now feels spacious and modern, while fitting in perfectly with the vintage architecture.
